Smog check rules

Do I need a smog check?

In California, most gasoline, hybrid and alternative-fuel vehicles from model year 1976 and newer need a smog check every other year to renew registration. Diesel vehicles from 1998 and newer with a gross vehicle weight rating of 14,000 pounds or less also need one. Vehicles eight model years old or newer are exempt at renewal.

My DMV notice says a STAR station is required. Can you help?

Yes. Union City Smog Check is STAR certified. Only a STAR station can certify a vehicle whose renewal notice says a STAR station is required.

STAR smog check explained

Do I need a smog check to sell my car?

Usually, yes. In California the seller provides a smog certificate, and the buyer needs one from within the last 90 days. Vehicles four model years old or newer, and transfers between immediate family members, are exempt.

How long is a smog certificate good for?

A smog certificate is sent to the DMV electronically and is valid for 90 days.

What happens if my car fails?

You'll get your results and can have the car repaired at a licensed repair station. Some emissions repairs are covered by warranty, and the state's Consumer Assistance Program may help pay for repairs. When you come back, the retest here is free.

How should I prepare my car for a smog check?

Make sure the check engine light is off, drive for a week or two after a battery change or jump start, and make sure any aftermarket emissions parts are CARB approved. See our smog check prep tips for details.
