What is a STAR station?

STAR is a certification from the California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) for smog check stations that meet higher, inspection-based performance standards. The program began on January 1, 2013. Both test-only and test-and-repair stations can be STAR certified. Union City Smog Check is a STAR-certified, test-only station.

Why does my notice say I need a STAR station?

The DMV directs some vehicles to STAR stations. These are called directed vehicles, and they include vehicles the state identifies as more likely to have high emissions. A vehicle that was found to be a gross polluter on an earlier test must also be tested at a STAR station.

Being directed to a STAR station is not a failed test. It only means where the test has to be done.

Can a regular smog station do it?

No. Only STAR stations may inspect directed and gross-polluting vehicles, so a result from a non-STAR station won't count. STAR stations can test every other vehicle too, so we also handle everyday renewals and change-of-ownership smog checks.

What to bring

  • Your vehicle, with the check engine light off.
  • Your DMV renewal notice, if you have one. It shows whether a STAR station is required.

What happens during the test

A licensed technician inspects your emissions equipment, then tests the vehicle. Most 2000 and newer vehicles are tested through the onboard computer (OBD). Many older vehicles get a tailpipe test, which may use a dynamometer. Most tests here take 15 to 20 minutes, and we go over the results with you. The smog check guide has more detail.

After the test

If you pass

The certificate goes to the DMV electronically and is valid for 90 days, so you can finish your registration renewal.

If you don't pass

We'll explain the results. Have the repairs done at a licensed repair station; some emissions repairs are covered by your vehicle's warranty, and the state's Consumer Assistance Program may help pay. When you come back, the retest here is free.
